Tip: The Magnet Test

How to tell between ferrous and non-ferrous metals

This is a great tool of the trade. ALWAYS carry a magnet! The magnet test is used to distinguish ferrous from non-ferrous metals; in other words, how to tell magnetic metals from non-magnetic metals. If the magnet sticks to the metal, it is a ferrous metal. This means it is the alloy composed from either nickel or cobalt.

Non-ferrous metal, are all the other metals such as brass, copper, and steel. This is where the money is!

The magnet will become your best friend! Always remember to have it with you when sorting your scrap.
